Mindfulness

In March, our focus was on Mindfulness. It’s such an important thing to consider in our daily lives, so we definitely wanted to include it in a blog post.

According to Wikipedia, mindfulness means “the psychological process of bringing one’s attention to experiences occurring in the present moment, which one can develop through the practice of meditation and through other training.”

At Movin’ Mountains, we fully believe in the practice of being mindful. Being present in the moment can help calm anxiety and bring us back down to earth when we are experiencing something scary or nerve-wracking.

A simple procedure that we can all employ at any age, is following these steps whenever we need to calm ourselves (or our children) down:

  1. Think of 5 things you can see
  2. Think of 4 things you can touch
  3. Think of 3 things you can hear
  4. Think of 2 things you can smell
  5. Think of 1 thing you can taste

By employing our senses, we are taking our mind off of something that may be causing us some anxiety, and focusing instead on what is here in this very moment, something we can control. We can control what we use our senses for, and using our senses to recognize our surroundings can help ground us when we feel like we might be floating away with unproductive or negative thoughts. It can help us feel more comfortable in our present surroundings and stop worrying about whatever it is that might be troubling us.

Another way to be mindful is something that many of us teach our children about; to be mindful of what they are saying to others. What we are really telling them is to think before they speak, which is a good reminder for all of us sometimes! Becoming or practicing being mindful is essentially training our brains to think more in a proactive way, instead of reacting to something too quickly – which is when we often make errors in judgement or say something we don’t mean, and start to think about things that may be making us anxious. It can help our brains to stay calm and make good choices.
